Episode 34- Vocal Fries - "Linguistic sanguche with a side of fries"

Published on: February 27, 2024

Next pod episode: Dr. Megan Figueroa & Dr. Carrie Gillon - the Vocal Fries!

Seriously though, we love talking to these two so much. Linet has been on their pod, and we were so excited to get the chance to interview them back. Our conversation taps into Megan’s & Carrie’s love of and experience with linguistics; and into Linet’s experiences and love of language and languages; and of course, Alexis’s deep language nerdery as a former Latin teacher.

Dr. Carrie Gillon is a Linguist and the Language Commission Coordinator for the Squamish Nation, with a longstanding interest in the Indigenous languages of North America (more on that in a bit). She is also the author of The Semantics of Determiners and the co-author of Nominal Contact in Michif, a book about language contact for an endangered Canadian language. Carrie is one half of the dynamic duo behind Vocal Fries podcast which directly tackles linguistic discrimination.

Dr. Megan Figueroa is a Developmental Psycholinguist  and Research Scientist at the Tweety Language Development Lab at the University of Arizona studying language development in children. She also started the Scholars to Read in the Field of Language database to help folks find traditionally marginalized scholars in Language research. She also co-hosts Vocal Fries with Carrie.
